How to Help

It is awkward and often dismaying to talk to someone who does not talk back. Children who are slow to learn to talk do not motivate parents to have conversations with them. As a result, parents often do all the talking: asking the question, answering it, and commenting upon it. Sometimes talking to a child can be so discouraging that it seems easier not to begin. In either case, the end result is that some children will live up to our lowered desires unless we learn to inspire them to communicate.

It is important to take time to observe and listen to your child. You will see how your child is presently getting his message across to you. You may find that your child is communicating with you in more ways than you thought. He may be using facial expression, body language, gestures or sounds.
